Responses to conflict across cultures

The extent, intensity, and nature of conflicts vary widely across cultures. Most research on conflict and conflict resolution comes from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) countries. However, levels of interpersonal violence, internal conflict, and international wars vary across cultures and are higher in some non-WEIRD societies. One example is Colombia, which has experienced a long-standing armed conflict. Together with Dr. Cristina Salvador and her team, we explore cultural variations in responses to conflict among samples from Latin America (Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina), the United States, and China. We primarily examine differences in conflict resolution strategies and the emotions associated with conflict and conflict resolution.
